Planning Permission to Refurbish Grade II Listed 1720s Building in Chelsea
Dyer Grimes Architecture has received planning permission for an extensive but sensitive refurbishment on a Grade II listed building on Lawrence Street, also known as Monmouth House after the long-since-demolished Manor House that once stood on the site.
Unfortunately, the site has been subject to a long history of heavy-handed repairs and unsympathetic alterations, so Kensington and Chelsea Council and English Heritage were relieved for it to be in the hands of an architect with a proud history of listed renovations that preserve and restore heritage assets.
Our design enhances the liveability of the house while simultaneously enhancing its period charm, by making tweaks such as replacing the current barrel vaulted roof light with a more appropriate Victorian lantern that both lets in more light and matches the original architecture.
In addition to a complete refurbishment of the interiors, the most dramatic change is excavation at the lower ground floor to create an external lower garden with steps up to the main garden. By opening up this space between the ground and lower ground, the once dark lower ground floor is flooded with natural light.
Our renovation of this historic home is due to be complete in the summer, so keep an eye on our blog for more updates.
