Drax Avenue
Wimbledon Village, London. SW19.
Louise & Sandro dreamed of building a new home in Wimbledon and started
searching for a suitable site The design conscious couple love the blend of
old and new with a strong belief that contemporary interior design can sit
harmoniously within a Traditional building. They longed for a light open
kitchen living, dining area with full height windows to provide stunning
views of the garden.
They finally found a 1930’s house and commissioned an Architect to submit
for Planning for a Contemporary home. Unfortunately Merton Council
refused the application and this was when Louise contacted DyerGrimes
Architects.
Our approach was to design a traditional house which reflected the local
Architectural vernacular, the street has Georgian and Arts and Crafts style
houses.
Through our long-standing relationship with Merton Conservation Officers
we were able to convince them to grant planning for a taller house with
elegant proportions.
They agreed that the new house would compliment the streetscape and the
fact that it would be built to the highest thermal standards and be Carbon
neutral was seen as a great benefit.
We successfully negotiated a beautiful new landscape design in exchange for
permission to remove a number of mature trees on the site.
The end result was a stunning period property which accommodated the
family’s need for space, light and contemporary living, whilst making a
positive contribution to the private road.
