Awards: Crescent Road Awarded for Outstanding Contribution to the Environment

We’re delighted to announce that Crescent Road – an ambitious demolition and brick-by-brick period recreation – has been awarded a Tony Leitch Townscape Award from the Kingston Upon Thames Society, which celebrates buildings that make an outstanding contribution to the environment.

John attended the ceremony with Kylie, our client and owner of the house, to receive the award from Julie Pickering, Mayor of Kingston. The judges commented that, “They could not believe the quality of the design and craftsmanship that had gone into this new house.”

This award is the perfect send off for a project that stated off in troubled waters. Kylie and her husband Neil initially wanted to extend the existing house on the site, but as it was the oldest house on the street and in a conservation area, their plans were rejected.

John rescued their dreams from the brink by proposing a risky and controversial demolition and rebuild that would mirror the adjoining property brick-by-matching-brick. You can read the fully story of how this seemingly impossible planning application won approval here.

About the Tony Leitch Townscape Awards

The Kingston Upon Thames Society was set up over 50 years ago to promote high standards of planning, conservation and design in the Royal Borough.

Every other

year the Society presents Townscape Awards recognising building developments which in the Society’s view have done the most to enhance the environment in the Royal Borough. The candidates are nominated by members of the public, or the Society, and the final selection is made by the Committee.

The Awards take the form of a framed certificate signed and presented by the Mayor as President of the Society at one of our regular Public Meetings. Past recipients have spoken of the high regard in which they hold them.

The Awards are made to developments which have enhanced the local environment. The improvement in design standards in recent years was indicated by our choice of six worthy winners from among eleven nominations.
