Fulham House, despite boasting a basement and extension which more than doubled the original floor size, fits unassumingly into a very typical terraced street.

An acid wash and repointing on the flank wall removed 100 years of grime to give a freshly-built look which highlights the quality of the original brickwork.

The sash windows are brand new period-appropriate replicas which look no different to those next door, with the benefit of opening and closing effortlessly. This symmetry continues with a chimney stack which now crowns the top to match the neighbour’s.

In stark contrast to the Victorian front elevation is the contemporary rear, viewed here from down in the basement light well. This huge light well is large enough to double as a rear courtyard, wrapped dramatically in two storeys of floor to ceiling glazing.

These vertical stacks of glass doors slide open for a smooth transition from indoor to outdoor, with a green wall which makes the space feel fresh and vibrant despite being underground. It’s by far our most ambitious lightwell yet.

The new basement excavation extends beneath the entire house for vast underground spaces, such as this recreational area with a fully fitted home gym, pool area and kids’ play room.

Natural light floods through the lightwell which, along with the green wall, makes it feel like anything but a basement.

Elsewhere in the basement floor is a luxurious cinema room, tucked out of the way behind an automated curtain which divides the space.

At the press of a button, the lights dim, a projector and screen drop from the ceiling and the show starts. Just add popcorn!

Above is the master bedroom, tastefully decorated in warm grey with brass accents for a timeless aesthetic to complement the sash windows and period plasterwork. A fitted, bespoke wardrobe and dressing table maximise the available space, which spreads across the entire front elevation.

Just out of shot are entrances to a large master en-suite and dressing room.

The top floor is for the kids, with a huge main bedroom created by a full-width mansard. Views out onto Craven Cottage football ground makes for a dose of daily inspiration!
